Tires, DOT Serial Number, and Safety

NEW YEAR.... Same us! Let's get you ready for the newness ahead!

We are kicking off the New Year by talking about TIRES! A service we now provide at our shop and have on order for you whenever you need! If your tire has a finicky nail, or has an air leak, we can diagnose and let you know if it needs a new one or if we can patch it!

I want to go into detail the importance of knowing how to read your tires DOT serial number. The DOT serial number is located on the inside wall of the tire and is usually followed by eight to thirteen letters or numbers. DOT verifies that the tires were made in the United States, and follow the Department of Transportation's (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's tire safety standards.  These numbers verify where the tire was manufactured, the size, manufacturers code, and most importantly the week and year of the tires making. It is highly important to pay close attention to the week and year portion. Anything over 6 years from the current date is out of date! In the photos below, we have the bad tires from week 41 of 2002 and then the good tires from week one of 2019. The tread on the 2002 tires are not only completely cracked and worn, but absolutely unsafe!

When you are determining the tire's age, you will be looking for the week it was manufactured, and then the year of that week in which it was manufactured.

A lot of retailers will offer you great "bargains" and "one of a kind deals" on purchasing a new set of tires. But, you must be aware of the DOT serial number to tell if these deals are actually benefiting you! You don't want to purchase tires that are over 2 years old. Typically with production, shipping, and distributing you would want them more in the year to year and a half range.

Here, at American Import Auto, we can customize the tires for your vehicle and make certain you are always purchasing tires of your choice. Both, Monique and Kevin can assist in making sure you aren't getting lemons put onto your vehicle. They both come to us with prior experience in tire sales and repair specifically, so we can say we are experts at this new field for our shop.

Safety is our number one concern, we want to make sure that you are driving on all of life's roads with all the confidence in our work. If you are ready for new tires, or your about to go on a nice, long road trip, then stop in today so we can set you up and get you going on a brand new set of tires! With the dip in temperatures this time of year we can also check all of those pesky tire pressure lights that come on!
